The Suds Report Newsletter
October 2002
Hello All:
I'm counting the days until my favorite season starts in
earnest; I'm more than ready to say goodbye to mosquitoes,
humidity and stifling heat. I'm packing up the sunscreen
and stocking up on heavier creams for colder weather.
By
the way, be sure to check out our
Suds on Sale page; we
have some good suggestions for and from Bathtime Suds Report readers.
New at
SudsReport.com
We've added two new articles this month: First, read our
review of a myriad of tea-scented products (green and
otherwise) in
Tea Time.
Then,
in
Man with a Plan,
we check out lines from two men who have a great touch with
bath and body products.
And the
Winners Are
Congratulations to our 3 September giveaway winners: Christy
H. from Charlotte, North Carolina, Sharin B.
from Westminster, California and Suzanne L. from Medford,
Massachusetts. hey each won a
bottle of "Present
Moment" Bath Tonic from
Kaliana.com. See
our review of
Kaliana's innovative line.
For October, we'll be giving away a bottle of Indulgence Blend
bath oil from
Black Pearl Botanicals.
Oil and Water
They don't mix, right? Well, think again.
Recently, Debbie Ludington of
Sweetgrass Farm contacted me
about her Bath Syrup, a fragrant bath oil that dissolves in
water. I gave it a try, and sure enough: the syrup
dissolved in the bathwater, creating a
fragrant, moisturizing
bath.
The secret? Castor oil. Sweetgrass
Farm combines castor oil with vegetable glycerin and either
lavender or vanilla oil for fragrance. Castor oil is
apparently unique in that it dissolves in water, rather than
just floating on top. Why isn't it used more often?
One possible answer: it just doesn't have the same
appealing sound as say "sweet almond" or "grapeseed" oils.
(Maybe because of castor oil's long history as a laxative?)
SweetgrassOnline.com is not alone in including castor oil in its bath
potions.
Aromaleigh.com offers bath oils made with castor oil and six
different aromatherapy blends of essential oils. Or, do
a search on Google (try key words like "castor oil" and "bath
oil") and you'll find a number of recipes for creating your
own concoctions.
Allure
Announces its Best of Beauty
It's that time again: Allure magazine has just published
its "Best of Beauty" listings, which include their editors'
picks as well as some of their readers' choices. Here
are some of the winners in the Body category:
Body Scrub: Murad
Exfoliating Body Cleansing Gel,
"dotted with blue jojoba
beads
and rice bran...a delicious citrus scent." Find it at
Murad.com
($20 for 6.7oz)
Hand Cream:
Olay Total Effects Hand Visible Anti-Aging Moisturizing
Treatment SPF 15. "Not overly unctuous (we can
still turn a doorknob),...and protects against UVA and UVB rays." ($8.99 for 1.7oz at
Drugstore.com).
Foot Cream: A repeat from
last year: Aveda Foot
Relief, with "rosemary and lavender oils and minty
fragrance [to] tingle our toes." Aveda body care products are not
widely available online; I found this one at
WorldWideBeautyStore.com ($11.50 for 40ml).
Body Wash: Kiehl's
Grapefruit Liquid Body Cleanser. "Its aroma is as
bracing as a glass of fresh-squeezed juice, it makes an ideal
lather, and it leaves no residue." ($12 for 8oz at
Kiehls.com).
For the second year in a row, readers chose Dove All Day Moisturizing Body Wash
(drugstore) and Bath and Body Works Cucumber Melon Refreshing
Shower Gel (department/specialty store). You'll find
the Dove Body wash at
Drugstore.com
($4.49 for 12oz). Incredibly, Bath and Body Works does
not sell its products online. However, there is always a
good selection of them for sale at eBay.
Lotion: Biotherm
Anti-Drying Body Milk "penetrates immediately... With its
citrus
scent and vitamin E, it exfoliates flakiness and slakes
dryness." Find Biotherm for sale online at
Nordstrom.com (8.3oz for $22).
Readers once again went with the same choices as last year: Nivea Body Extra Enriched Lotion
(drugstore), and Bath and Body Works Cucumber melon
Moisture-Rich Body Lotion (department/specialty store).
Find Nivea lotion at
Drugstore.com
($4.99 for 8oz). Again, try eBay for Bath
and Body Works products.
Razor: Gillette
Mach3Turbo, with "enhanced friction-fighting blades and a
lubricating vitamin E strip for a safe, speedy shave." $8.99 at Drugstore.com
(this razor also won last year).
In the
Works
Coming up soon:
Calypso Cosmetics,
natural baby products and
upscale organic lines. Also in the works:

bath and body products,
